Day 2 - Ay - Champagne - Ay
The pop of a cork. The fizz of thebubbles. The clink of toastingglasses. Today is devotedto discovering Champagneand its liquid riches. Epernayis arguably its epicentre, sowe pause here to stroll upAvenue de Champagne, linedwith many famous merchantshouses and cellars. Then it's onto La Côte des Blancs, wherewe visit an artisan producer.After wandering through thevineyards and watching thepressing and distillation process,we sit down together to enjoya crisp, refreshing glass or twoof the final product. Our roadback to Ay takes us through thebeautiful Montagne de Reimsarea, known for its Pinot Noir. (B)

Day 3 - Ay - Chablis - Dijon
Now to swap fizz for the dry,pure white wines of Chablis.Here we visit a traditional cellar,where barrels are piled highunder arched ceilings that havestood for hundreds of years.Guided by an expert tastingmaster, we sip the best localwines. Afternoon brings usto Dijon, where you have theevening free to explore thisattractive city known for itsgothic grandeur. (B)

Day 4 - Dijon - Beaune - Beaujolais - Lyon
Walled Beaune, the beatingheart of the Burgundy wineregion, is our first port of call,where we visit the peacefulHospices of Beaune. Foundedas a hospital for the poor inthe 15th century, it also hasits own vineyards and hostsa prestigious wine auctioneach year. Next we drop by asprawling wine estate in theverdant Beaujolais countrysidebefore continuing to Lyon. Awarm welcome comes courtesyof a meal in a traditionalBouchon Lyonnais - a type ofbistro known for a convivial,relaxed atmosphere thataccompanies authentic, heartydishes. (B, D)

Day 5 - Lyon
Today you're free to exploreLyon at your own pace. Saunteralong the riverside, whose banksare flanked with tall, colourfulhouses. Learn about everythingfrom the early days of cinemato classic cars at the museums.Visit traditional ateliers, where time-honoured crafts are still practiced. Or simply take a seatin one of the many restaurantsto discover why Lyon claimsthe title of ‘gourmet capital ofFrance'. (B)

Day 6 - Lyon - Rhône Valley - Uriage-Les-Bains
We're back on the wine trailas we venture into the RhôneValley, home to some ofFrance's oldest vineyards. Aftera private tasting session atTain l'Hermitage, source of thefamous Hermitage wines, weclimb into the French Alps. Takein swoon-worthy mountain viewsfrom Villard-de-Lans, before wecontinue on to the romantic spatown of Uriage-les-Bains. (B, D)

Day 7 - Uriage-Lesbains - Saint-Pierre-Dechartreuse - Uriage-Lesbains
Deep in a green valley betweentowering peaks, we find GrandeChartreuse Monastery. Beforewe see the complex itself, wedrop by the Chartreuse museumto learn about its history -along with the origins of theCarthusian Order who built it.We stroll to the monastery andenjoy a picnic lunch amidst thestunning scenery, before drivingon to the monks' distillery inVoiron. Here they make thefamous Chartreuse liquor, whoserecipe dates back to the 18thcentury - and we're treated to ataste. (B, L)

Day 8 - Uriage-Les-Bains - Sisteron - Forcalquier
Our road turns south towardsProvence today, with Alpineslopes giving way to rugged hillsand wildflower meadows as wedrive through the Drome region.We stop in Châtillon-en-Diois,a pretty town surrounded bysheer cliffs and forests, beforecontinuing to Sisteron. Thismedieval commune, strewn overa deep turquoise river betweena mountain pass, is the gateway to Provence. The citadel,which crowns an impressiverocky hilltop, pairs fascinatinghistory with sweeping views.Finally, we reach Forcalquier,where we settle in for a farewelldinner and final overnight stayat a charming 18th centuryfarmhouse. Day 9 - Forcalquier - Entrevaux - Nice
Our closing day takes usdeeper into exquisite Provençalcountryside. Entrevaux, amedieval town set betweenrolling green countryside and adeep blue sky. Nice, elite resortand shining capital of the FrenchRiviera, soon beckons. And it'shere that our tour ends, amongthe golden beaches and clearwaters of the Côte d'Azur. (B)
