Explore stunning architecture, great cuisine and dramatic landscapes with this delightful itinerary transcending Spain and Portugal. Start in Lisbon and discover its extravagant palaces and opulent mansions, before visiting local markets and joining a Portuguese cooking class. Be enchanted by the medieval citadels of Alentejo and visit the historic village of Monsaraz. Arrive in Spain via Jabugo, Spain’s Jamon Iberico or ham capital. Explore the Andalusian cities of Seville and Granada and before ending your trip in Madrid, Spain’s vibrant, metropolitan capital.
Day 1: Sunday: The capital of Wales
Welcome to Cardiff! Make your own way here and spend a day at leisure enjoying the capital of Wales. There is plenty to see in the town centre, including the impressive Cardiff Castle and Sofia Gardens. Why not spend some time in Cardiff Bay, the largest waterfront development in Europe? This is a very popular spot to visit with its variety of restaurants and cafes and is home to the National Assembly for Wales – the body that governs the country. This evening you will enjoy a traditional pub dinner just around the corner from your boutique hotel! Overnight: Cathedral 73 Hotel, Cardiff. (D)
Day 2: Monday: Welsh way of life
Today you will be picked up by your driver-guide and will begin your journey by learning everything about Welsh way of life! You will spend your morning exploring St Fagans, one of Europe’s leading open-air museums. This National History Museum explores all aspects of how people in Wales have lived, worked and spent their leisure time. You will then travel into Brecon Beacons National Park, where you will learn the industrial history of Wales! You will visit the National Museum of Mining – Blaenavon Big Pit to embark on a 300 foot descent into the former colliery to experience the life of a working miner. After a day full of impressions, you will be able to relax in the grounds of Jabajak Vineyard, where you will be staying tonight.Overnight: Jabajak Vineyard, Whitland. (B)
Day 3: Tuesday: Coastal scenery
Travel into the stunning Pembrokeshire peninsula, and spend the morning at the stunning seaside town of Tenby. You will then journey into the unique city of St Davids, smallest city in Britain, and spend some time in the magnificent Cathedral and the ruins of the medieval Bishops Castle next to it. Stop at the coastal harbour town of Aberaeron and visit Wales’ National Library in the bustling university town of Aberystwyth.Overnight: Richmond Hotel, Aberystwyth. (B)
Day 4: Wednesday: Enchanted places
Today embark on the Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway and enjoy the village of Devil’s Bridge in the heart of the Cambrian Mountains and take a walk around the mythical waterfalls here which are said to be the last place the Devil visited in Wales. This afternoon travel into North Wales stop at superbly located castles and sites on the way. You will stop in the unique Italianate village of Portmeirion. Enjoy the fantastic gardens, learn about its history and while away the afternoon in the quaint cafés and shops. For any fans of the series ‘The Prisoner’, this is where the show was filmed!Overnight: Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon. (B)
Day 5: Thursday: Essence of the North
Today you will start by exploring the busy market town of Caernarfon – you will visit the imposing medieval Castle, built by Edward the 1st. You will then discover the Isle of Anglesey. Connected to the North Wales coast by two bridges, it features long stretches of coastline that have been declared Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Stop at the longest place name in Europe, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. You will then venture into the heart of Snowdonia and visit the National Slate Museum. You will share your impressions as you enjoy the farewell dinner with the group at the WAL restaurant tonight. Overnight: Celtic Royal Hotel, Caernarfon. (BD)
Day 6: Friday: Onward Journey
Today you will wave Wales goodbye as you depart on your onward journey. (B)
