7 Days: Skopje, Lake Matka, Mavrovo National Park, Struga, Ohrid, St. Naum Monastery, Bitola, Krushevo, Prilep, Kavadartsi, Stobi, Veles, Skopje

Tour Overview
Start your discovery of North Macedonia in the capital of Skopje. A city split by the Vardar River, one side is filled with colonnades, gardens and squares and the opposite side is where you will find the maze of shops in the Skopje Old Bazaar. Travel to Mavrovo National Park with its lake. Explore Struga, known as the town of poetry. In Ohrid, marvel at the beautiful monastery of St. Naum the shore of Ohrid lake. And in Bitola, see the Roman amphitheatre and incredible mosaics at the Heraclea Lyncestis archaeological complex.

Day 1: Skopje

Arrival in Skopje. Transfer to the hotel and accommodation. Sightseeing tour of Skopje – Macedonia Square, the statue of Mother Teresa, the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, the Stone Bridge – symbol of Skopje, the church of St. Spas (Holy Salvation), Skopje Fortress, Old Varosha quarter. Free time for individual visit to the Archaeological Museum or Skopje Museum housed in the old railway station. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Skopje.


Day 2: Skopje

Breakfast. Drive to Lake Matka, which is the most popular summer retreat of most citizens of Skopje. Boat trip along the lake with a visit of Vrelo Cave. Visit of the Monastery Church of St. Andrew in Matka, built in the 14th century. Departure for the village of Gorno Nerezi, located in the slopes of Vodno Mountain for a visit of the Monastery Church of St. Panteleimon. This is a remarkable mediaeval church built in the 12th century, representing an important heritage from the Byzantine period – the fresco composition “Lamentation of Christ”. Return to Skopje. Optional dinner at traditional restaurant in Skopje with music and dances. Overnight in Skopje. (B)


Day 3: Skopje – Mavrovo – Monastery Of St. John Bigorski – Struga – Ohrid

Breakfast. Departure for Mavrovo National Park. Stop at Mavrovo Lake – the biggest artificial lake in North Macedonia, part of the National Park. Photo break by the flooded church of St. Nicholas, build in mid-19th century. Visit to the mystical and tranquil Monastery of St. John Bigorski (St John the Baptist). Walking tour in Struga – the town of poetry – St. George Church, Brothers Miladinovi Memorial House, Old Bazaar. Arrival in Ohrid in the evening. Accommodation at the Ohrid Riviera. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Ohrid. (B)


Day 4: Ohrid

Breakfast. Guided sightseeing tour of Ohrid. The tour starts in front of the statue of St. Cyril and Methodius, and continues to the Lower gate, the Church of St. Sophia, the Roman Theatre, the Upper gate, St. Clements’s Church, the church St. John Kaneo, Tsar Samuil’s Fortress, Ohrid’s marketplace, etc. Free time. In the afternoon a tour to the beautiful monastery of St. Naum – famous monastery complex on the shore of Ohrid lake. The original church of the Holy Archangels was built in the early 10th century by St. Naum and later it housed the tomb and relics of the saint himself but today its remains are buried beneath the present 16th-century church. Optional boat tour on the Ohrid Lake (approx. 1 hour, only if meteorological conditions are suitable). Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Ohrid. (B)


Day 5: Ohrid – Bitola – Krushevo – Prilep

Breakfast. Departure for Bitola. Sightseeing tour of the town – the famous Clock Tower, first built in 1664 but got its present appearance in the 19th century, the church St. Demetrius, the main street Shirok Sokak. Visit to the ancient town Heraclea Lyncestis founded by Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Departure for Krushevo. Walking tour – Toshe Proeski’s memorial house, the churches of St. Nicholas and St. John, the museum-gallery of Nikola Martinovski, Monument Makedonium. Return to the Pelagonian Plain. Accommodation in Prilep. Short sightseeing tour of the town centre. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight. (B)


Day 6: Prilep – Kavadartsi – Stobi – Veles – Skopje

Breakfast. Visit to the monastery of Archangel Michael above the Old town of Prilep. Departure for the town of Kavadartsi. Visit to the famous Tikvesh Winery – largest on the Balkan peninsula, for wine tasting. Drive to Stobi and tour of the archaeological reserve – one of the most developed ancient cities in the Roman province of Macedonia, important early Christian center. Drive to Veles. Sightseeing tour of the town, located on the shores of Vardar River. Drive to Skopje. Accommodation. Optional dinner at the hotel. Overnight in Skopje. (B)


Day 7: Skopje

Breakfast. Transfer to Skopje Airport and departure. (B)
